Catfish Bubblegum in partnership with Texas Trophy Catfish Association coordinated the first annual Kids Fish Fest at Walden Marina on Lake Conroe! I’d call this event a huge success! With over 150 kids in attendance and 250+ folks, there were smiles all around!
- 150+ kids in attendance
- Fish Weighed In: 52 (This does not include fish that were immediately released.)
- Casting Contest Participants: 48
- 7 kids caught their first fish!
One little girl in particular caught my eye and made all of the stress and planning worth every second! With all these children running around, bringing in fish, laughing and smiling, I saw a young girl sitting on a bench, visibly upset. Kenly, age 9, came from Alabama to visit her cousin in Montgomery, Texas, and was disappointed she hadn’t caught a fish. I offered to teach her. She declined. I offered her a drink. She shook her head. I offered her a snow cone, and she still said no! I knew at that point I’d have to pull in the big guns to get Kenly’s day to make a turnaround. I said, “Do you want private fishing lessons from a famous TV star fisherman?” She grinned and nodded.
I snatched Brad, who had just gotten off his boat from a guided trip he had that morning, and told him we needed to get a fish for this kiddo! He immediately jumped into action and off they went to the other side of the dock. From then I’m not sure what was said or done, but I do know that within just a few minutes I looked over and Kenly reeling in her first Catfish!
Her smile was radiating to everyone around her as I carried her fish back over the bridge to the weigh station. She proudly showed her 4oz. Channel Catfish to her aunt and the camera before placing it in the rejuvenation tank to rehabilitate before release.
This is Kenly’s story, but she is just one of over 150 children we were able to take fishing. We taught them angler etiquette, how to bait their hook and cast, had a casting contest, and taught them about Trophy Catfish conservation and how to tag and release fish!
Little did I know, we would make the FRONT PAGE of The Courier of Montgomery County Sunday newspaper the next day!

Texas Trophy Catfish Association will be hosting Bradley’s Fish Fest (Round 2) on September 22, 2018 at Walden Marina. We are still in need of billboard sponsors and donations for our silent auction to help pay for the children so we can continue to teach kids to fish at no cost to them. It costs us approximately $17 per child with an estimated 500+ children to be in attendance in September. To sponsor to make a donation, please call 936.232.4683.
